2020 is almost upon us. Wild, I know! A new year, a new decade. For me, the first unhealthy coping mechanism I resort to in order to help me get through this big of a crisis (like that of entering an entirely new decade) is to go hide in the comfort of the closest, darkest movie theater and escape into some wild, cool fictional world that’s about to be carved out and built in front of me for 2+ hours.
2020 is the start of a new decade of films, a new phase of a certain superhero cinematic universe, and a new and exciting film entertainment landscape. Now, these are going to be in no particular order. This is just an unordered list of films I know are coming out in 2020 that I’m just super hyped for. Now, I don’t know every single movie coming out next year, especially those that are most likely Oscar-bait and will be released in the latter half of 2020, so if anything, I’ll do an update about halfway through the year as the vision of the film landscape becomes more clear.
Now that I got my disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into my list!
1. Black Widow
Director: Cate Shortland
Writer: Ned Benson (screenplay), Don Heck (comic book/character)
Release Date: May 1st, 2020
The only thing about this movie that makes me angry is that it took this damn long for Natasha Romanoff to get her own solo film. And after her cinematic death, no less!
2. Wonder Woman: 1984
Director: Patty Jenkins
Writers: Dave Callaham, Geoff Johns, and Patty Jenkins
Release Date: June 5th, 2020
The first WW film got me right in the feels. Give me more female empowerment now, please! Diana Prince looks even MORE badass in the sequel than in the first film, something I didn’t even think was possible until the first teaser trailer was released.
3. Birds of Prey (It’s GETTING AN R-RATING, Y’ALL KNOW IT’S GONNA BE LIT)
Director: Cathy Yan
Writer: Christina Hodson
Release Date: February 7th, 2020
I have a good feeling about this one. Do I know anything about any of the characters in this specific storyline not named Harley Quinn (or on a broader note, Poison Ivy)? Nah, but Margot Robbie was born for this role.
Director: Niki Caro
Writer: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Release Date: March 27th, 2020
Mulan was my hero as a kid, and I think I’m most excited for this live-action reboot. (More than any that’s come out prior). The film looks so beautifully shoot and the attention to detail is impeccable.
5. Top Gun: Maverick
Director: Joseph Kosinski
Writer: Jim Cash, Peter Craig
Release Date: June 26th, 2020
They already teased a very homoerotic football scene in the trailer… so I’m already in. Joking aside, the dogfighting footage looks absolutely stunning, and Tom Cruise just seems so excited to revisit this beloved franchise some 30-ish years later.
6. In the Heights
Director: Jon M. Chu
Writer: Lin Manuel-Miranda, Marc Klein
Release Date: June 26th, 2020
Fun Fact: When I think of Lin-Manuel Miranda, I think of In The Heights first, Hamilton second. I’ve been sayyyiiiinnngg that this musical is perfect for a film adaptation and the trailer is only proving to me that it’s in good hands under the direction of Crazy Rich Asians’ John M. Chu.
7. The Woman in the Window
Director: Joe Wright
Writer: A.J. Finn, Tracy Letts
Release Date: May 15th, 2020
If you’re a fan of thrillers like Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, this is right up your alley, my dude! I read the. Book and could not put it down. I can’t wait to see the. Film adaptation with Amy Adams in the lead role.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Writer: Christopher Nolan
Release Date: July 17th, 2020
Do I know ANYTHING about the plot of this movie? Nope, but when Chris Nolan comes out with a mind-bending concept, you can’t help but get excited.
Director: Chloe Zhao
Writer: Matthew K. Firpo, Jack Kirby
Release date: November 6th, 2020
Angelina Jolie? Check. A Bevy of Game of Thrones actors? Check. Marvel source material? Yes. Count me in!
10. West Side Story
Director: Steven Spielberg
Writer: Tony Kushner, Arthur Laurents
Release Date: December 18th, 2020
Two words: Steven Spielberg. That’s it, that’s the sale. (I also loved the original West Side Story film so that helps too).
This list was super hard to narrow down to just 10, but I’ve done it! What movies are you most excited for in 2020? Let me know!
Happy film-going and Happy New Year!!
